1974 to Present
At the time of Eggleston’s birth, there existed a severe shortage of residential treatment homes for abused and neglected youth. The shortage of homes was especially acute for African American youth. Although, African Americans only represented 13% of US population, African American youth disproportionately represented 60% of youth in foster care. Thus, Eggleston Youth Centers was born out of necessity to help alleviate the lack of quality homes to meet the needs of foster youth.
